AN ACT

MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO FUND NURSING EDUCATION PROGRAMS STATEWIDE TO RELIEVE NEW MEXICO'S SHORTAGE OF PROFESSIONAL NURSES.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--

A. Three million six hundred seventy-two thousand three hundred dollars ($3,672,300) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of the university of New Mexico as follows:

(1) one million one hundred fifty-four thousand one hundred dollars ($1,154,100) for expenditure in fiscal year 2003, as follows:

(a) nine hundred fifty thousand dollars ($950,000) to support continued nursing education enrollment; and

(b) two hundred four thousand one hundred dollars ($204,100) for geographic expansion of nursing education in collaboration with other New Mexico institutions of higher learning;

(2) one million seven hundred thirty-four thousand one hundred dollars ($1,734,100) for expenditure in fiscal year 2004, as follows:

(a) nine hundred fifty thousand dollars ($950,000) to support continued nursing education enrollment; and

(b) seven hundred eighty-four thousand one hundred dollars ($784,100) for geographic expansion of nursing education in collaboration with other New Mexico institutions of higher learning; and

(3) seven hundred eighty-four thousand one hundred dollars ($784,100) for expenditure in fiscal year 2005 for geographic expansion of nursing education in collaboration with other New Mexico institutions of higher learning.

B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2005 shall revert to the general fund.

Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars ($750,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico state university for expenditure in fiscal year 2003 to adjust nursing education faculty salaries to competitive levels to maintain necessary staffing levels, to hire new nursing education faculty and to purchase equipment necessary for nursing education both at the main campus and at various branch colleges of the university. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2003 shall revert to the general fund.
