A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE SECRETARY OF HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION TO CONDUCT AN ENGINEERING SURVEY AND TRAFFIC INVESTIGATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAISING THE SPEED LIMIT ON ALL RURAL 4 LANE HIGHWAYS.



WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 66-7-303 NMSA 1978, the secretary of highway and transportation may raise speed limits on state highways up to seventy-five miles per hour after conducting an engineering survey and traffic investigation; and

WHEREAS, highway 550, between Bernalillo and northwest New Mexico, has been recently widened and upgraded and is now one of the premier highways in the state; and

WHEREAS, the new improved highway can now safely accommodate vehicles traveling at higher speeds;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the secretary of highway and transportation be requested to initiate the process for declaring a speed limit of seventy-five miles per hour on all rural 4 lane highways by conducting an engineering survey and traffic investigation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the results of the survey and investigation be submitted to the New Mexico senate; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of highway and transportation.
