A MEMORIAL

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 11, 2002 TO BE "COMMUNITY EDUCATION DAY" AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND DECLARING LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY EDUCATION.



WHEREAS, education is a lifelong process and everyone in the community, including individuals, businesses, public and private agencies, shares resources for educating all members of the community; and

WHEREAS, citizens have a right and a responsibility to be involved in determining community needs and identifying community resources, and linking those needs and resources to improve their community; and

WHEREAS, thirty-eight states, including New Mexico, have community education organizations dedicated to improving their communities; and

WHEREAS, community education provides all members of the community, regardless of their age, background and needs, with educational and health resources; and

WHEREAS, community education is characterized by optimum use of public education facilities by people of all ages in their community; and

WHEREAS, community education results in a responsive education system and an improved learning climate in the schools; and

WHEREAS, partnerships with business, industry and schools enhance the learning climate of the community; and

WHEREAS, the New Mexico community education association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing support to New Mexico communities to further enrich their educational climate;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 11, 2002 be proclaimed "Community Education Day" at the house of representatives; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the governor be requested to proclaim February 11, 2002 as "Community Education Day"; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor.
