Redistricting is the process of redrawing the political boundaries for Congressional, Legislative and other political districts to reflect changes in population. As the state's population changes, current districts become less equal in population; the objective of redistricting is to redraw those lines so that districts are nearly equal in population.

The process occurs every ten years, following the census.

The New Mexico Legislature this year will redraw the political boundaries for the state's three Congressional districts, seventy House of Representatives districts, forty-two Senate districts, five Public Regulation Commission districts, ten State Board of Education districts and magistrate districts in five counties. The Legislature will perform this task following a series of public meetings throughout the state.

You are invited and encouraged to participate with us in this process. You are welcome to attend any of the meetings of the Legislature's Redistricting Committee, offer written comments to the committee and to attend the special session, which is expected to be held in September, to redraw the political boundaries.
