REQUESTING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION TO IMPLEMENT A RESEARCH-BASED HIGH SCHOOL REFORM EFFORT.
WHEREAS, education is a critical element of a person's success and high school is the educational level that best prepares us for entering the work force; and
WHEREAS, a high school's performance in educating its students is directly related to preparation of students to enter high school; and
WHEREAS, performance at the post-secondary level depends heavily on the adequacy of the high school preparation of students;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state department of public education be requested to implement research-based high school reform to create a more proactive and responsive high school system; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the effort involve the elementary, middle school and post-secondary institutions, building upon business education partnerships and professional development curriculum for a continuous improvement process involving youth in the process; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state department of public education report its findings to the legislative education study committee by November 1, 2001; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the superintendent of public instruction.
