REQUESTING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO TO NAME THE VALENCIA CAMPUS CHILD CARE CENTER THE SUE ELLEN PERALTA CHILD CARE CENTER.
WHEREAS, Sue Ellen Peralta was a lifelong resident of Belen; and
WHEREAS, she died suddenly on January 9, 2001; and
WHEREAS, she was a single parent and recognized the need to provide a better life for herself and her three children and enrolled in the university of New Mexico at Valencia in 1988; and
WHEREAS, she believed fervently in the rights of students and got involved in student government, eventually becoming the student body president of the university of New Mexico at Valencia, assistant lobby director of the associated students of the university of New Mexico, director of the lobby committee of associated students of the university of New Mexico and of the associated students of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, she worked diligently on student regent issues and for emergency phones on campus; and
WHEREAS, she received her bachelor's degree in political science and communications in 1996 and began working for the university of New Mexico in Albuquerque; and
WHEREAS, because of her love of education and the Valencia branch, she became a candidate for the university of New Mexico at Valencia advisory board at the time of her death;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of the university of New Mexico be requested to name the university of New Mexico at Valencia child care center the "Sue Ellen Peralta Child Care Center" in honor of Sue Ellen Peralta's contributions to the students of the university of New Mexico and her commitment to the Valencia branch; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the board of regents of the university of New Mexico.
