A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO NAME THE CAPITOL NORTH THE "RAYMOND G. SANCHEZ CAPITOL NORTH".



WHEREAS, Raymond G. Sanchez began a long legislative career in 1971, rising quickly through the ranks to become chairman of the house judiciary committee, majority floor leader and speaker of the house of representatives; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sanchez developed his love for and knowledge of the legislative process and institution under the tutelage of Speaker Walter K. Martinez, who, until Raymond Sanchez became speaker, had held that position longer than any New Mexican; and

WHEREAS, as speaker of the house for sixteen years, Raymond Sanchez led the house of representatives and the legislature as it dealt with innumerable challenging issues; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Sanchez's record sixteen-year tenure as speaker of the house of representatives stands as a tribute to his leadership abilities, fairness, impartiality and vision; and

WHEREAS, as the demands on the legislature grew, offices for some members of the house and some legislative staff were moved to the renovated capitol north;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative council be requested to name the capitol north the "Raymond G. Sanchez Capitol North" in honor of Speaker Sanchez's contributions to the legislative institution; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the director of the legislative council service.
