REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE TO MONITOR THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE STATEWIDE READING INITIATIVE AND PUBLIC SCHOOL READING PROFICIENCY FUND.
WHEREAS, the second special session of the forty-fourth legislature enacted into law the statewide reading initiative; and
WHEREAS, the second special session of the forty-fourth legislature also created the public school reading proficiency fund; and
WHEREAS, the legislative intent of the initiative and the fund was to improve reading proficiency of students in the state; and
WHEREAS, both the statewide reading initiative and the public school reading proficiency fund are of extreme importance in improving the reading proficiency of the students in the state; and
WHEREAS, the design of the statewide reading initiative and the management of the public school reading proficiency fund to support the reading initiative are administered by the state department of public education;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative education study committee be requested to monitor the state department of public education's design and implementation of the statewide reading initiative and the management of the public school reading proficiency fund; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chair of the legislative education study committee and the superintendent of public instruction.
