SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
The memorial finds that the Museum of New Mexico has entered into a licensing agreement with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation which, in turn, has sublicensed the reproduction of museum pieces to an out-of-state commercial manufacturer. The memorial requests that the Museum consider additional organizations for licensing agreements in the future.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
No fiscal impact.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
The Office of Cultural Affairs argues that a single current licensing agreement could create "competition with New Mexico traditional furniture makers" , or it could actually create a greater market for and appreciation of hand-made arts and crafts in addition to mass manufactured products. However, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation reports that without the memorial it will continue to enter into licensing agreements sensitively with appropriate manufacturers and distributors. Any New Mexico organization has been welcome and is currently invited to discuss licensing agreements with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.
