Senate Joint Memorial 53 recognizes Elfego Baca's contributions to New Mexico's heritage, primarily as a champion for the underdog and staunch defender of justice. He was a gunfighter, lawman, marshal, attorney, politician, private detective, school superintendent, mayor, county clerk and district attorney.
The New Mexico Senate recognizes Elfego Baca's dedication to the state of New Mexico and takes pride in the part Mr. Baca played in the history of the old west.
