SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 710 appropriates $150,490 from the general fund to the Office of Cultural Affairs for the purpose of paying the operational expenses of the Office of Archaeological Studies of the Museum of New Mexico division.
Significant Issues
The standard funding stream for the Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) comes from an appropriation by the state road fund. As a part of the Museum of New Mexico, the OAS is frequently called upon for public education and preservation programs that cannot be supported by the current appropriations from the road fund, which limits OAS activities to highway projects. This appropriation would allow the OAS to become involved with broad public programs.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $ 150.5 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY02 shall revert to the general fund.
