SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Joint Resolution 27 proposes to amend the State Constitution to change the name of State Highway Commission to State Transportation Commission.
Significant Issues
According to the department, this name change was submitted as a referendum in a general election several years ago and soundly defeated by the voters.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Minimal fiscal impact to accommodate name change if it occurs. All operational efforts of the Commission are handled by the State Highway and Transportation Department, so there are few matters or items that are identified by State Highway Commission. Even Department stationery will not need to be changed since it only refers to "Commisson."
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
No impact.
TECHNICAL ISSUES
If this constitutional amendment is successful, statutes would require amendments to initiate the name change.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
The proposed name change would better reflect the statutory responsibility over all forms of transportation given to the State Highway Commission.
