SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The Legal Holiday in Honore of Cesar Chavez joint respolutions amendment to Article 20 of the Constitution of New Mexico to designate the last Friday in March as a legal holiday in honor of Cesar Chavez.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The state may have to provide additional holiday pay for employees of those entities that must provide 24-hour services. Additionally, the state would lost gross receipts revenue from state contract employees.

A special election would cost at least $30.0 while placing the resolution on the general ballot would cost approximately $17.0. Each proposed constitutional amendment must be translated into Spanish and Native American languages, published and printed on each ballot. However, these costs are generally absorbed into the Secretary of State's budget.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

The correct spelling of César Chávez requires accent marks over the "e" in César and over the "a" in Chávez.
