SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Joint Memorial 13 has no fiscal impact and was introduced to acknowledge that New Mexico's senior population, over the age of sixty-five, is growing faster than the senior population in forty-one other states. More than 70,000 New Mexico veterans are over the age of sixty. Most seniors prefer to remain in their own homes rather than living in long-term care facilities, but they need help to remain at home. The New Mexico legislature is committed to providing many of the services needed. Seniors engage in the legislative process and support beneficial legislation. The legislature resolved that January 26, 2001 be declared New Mexico "Senior Day at the Legislature" and further resolved that the legislature would support many of the senior programs. This memorial expresses the desire to keep senior citizens vital, active and well in their own homes and communities.
