AN ACT

RELATING TO HIGHER EDUCATION; PROVIDING FOR A PILOT PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF LAW UNDER WHICH A LIMITED NUMBER OF NEW STUDENTS MAY BE ADMITTED PURSUANT TO SPECIAL ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF LAW--PILOT PROGRAM--SPECIAL ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS--REPORT.--

A. Pursuant to rules adopted by the board of regents, the university of New Mexico school of law shall establish a pilot program under which no more than five students shall be admitted annually. The school shall establish the same entrance requirements for students in the pilot program as are established for other students in the school of law except:

(1) an undergraduate degree from a post-secondary school shall not be a requirement; and

(2) in lieu of an undergraduate degree, the entrance requirements shall include experience related to reading the law; working in law firms, public sector legal offices, the judicial or legislative branches of government; or other relevant experience.

B. The school of law shall annually report on the results of the pilot program, including its recommendation on whether to terminate or expand the program, to the commission on higher education and the legislature.
