AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO PROVIDE INTENSIVE SUMMER EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR GRADES ONE THROUGH THREE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Four million dollars ($4,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 to provide intensive summer education programs, taught by certified school instructors, to students in grades one through three. The focus of the intensive summer education programs shall be on literacy and may also include mathematics and science. The certified school instructors teaching the intensive summer education programs shall be compensated at the salary rate they receive when instructing during the school year. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
