REMEMBERING LAWRENCE B. INGRAM, A STATESMAN, DEPARTMENT SECRETARY AND DEVOTED NEW MEXICAN.
WHEREAS, Lawrence Ingram died July 15, 1999; and
WHEREAS, he was born in Roswell and grew up in Quay county, gaining early business experience working for the family enterprise, Crescent Creamery; and
WHEREAS, he was president of his high school class all four years at Tucumcari high school, where he was nicknamed "Rojo", quarterbacked the football team and lettered in basketball; and
WHEREAS, he received a degree in chemistry from Baylor university and went on to advanced study at Cambridge university; and
WHEREAS, he was administrative assistant to Congressman Tom Morris, worked for the Kennedy and Johnson presidential campaigns and helped get the Peace Corps established; and
WHEREAS, he returned to New Mexico in 1964 to manage Crescent Creamery, served as the Quay county democratic party chair, was a member of the state central committee and chair of the state party; and
WHEREAS, he was secretary of human services from 1979 to 1982 and chair of the public utility commission from 1991 to 1995; and
WHEREAS, he was a member of the state park commission, the Santa Fe community college foundation board, the Salvation Army board, the New Mexico comprehensive health insurance pool board, the American arbitration association national panel, the Kiwanis club, the St. John's Methodist church board, the Quay county association for retarded children and the Tucumcari area vocational school advisory board; and
WHEREAS, he enjoyed singing as a bass-baritone soloist in New Mexico and Washington and officiating soccer and football; and
WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Barbara, three daughters, one son, two grandchildren, his mother, two sisters, three brothers and many friends and colleagues;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolences be extended to the friends and family of Lawrence B. Ingram, a distinguished, loving and devoted New Mexican; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to his wife and members of his family.
