SENATE MEMORIAL 1

44th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - second session, 2000

INTRODUCED BY

L. Skip Vernon

A MEMORIAL

EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO THE EFFORT TO LEGALIZE OR DECRIMINALIZE ILLEGAL DRUGS.

WHEREAS, it is irrefutable that drug abuse in our society is responsible for an immeasurable loss of human potential and productivity; and

WHEREAS, drug abuse is linked to dissolution of families, neglect of children, crimes of violence, property crimes, school dropout rates and a host of other social ills; and

WHEREAS, declarations in support of legalizing or decriminalizing illegal drugs erode the efforts of law enforcement officers who are in the front line of efforts to stem drug abuse; and

WHEREAS, incessant campaigning for the legalization or decriminalization of drugs sends a confusing message to children who are otherwise taught to live healthy, drug-free lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the supporters of this memorial express their opposition to efforts to legalize or decriminalize illegal drugs; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the supporters of this memorial advocate intensified prosecution of drug traffickers, particularly individuals who sell or provide illegal drugs to children; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor.
