Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA)
SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 9 requests the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) work with the owners of the Shakespeare Ghost Town to determine if the ghost town should be designated a New Mexico State Monument.
Significant Issues
In November 1999, the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated building within the Shakespeare Ghost Town as official projects in an effort to preserve America's cultural treasures. One method of preserving this ghost town would be to designate it as a state monument so that OCA would be responsible for the stewardship of the resource, a responsibility it has at four other state monuments throughout New Mexico.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Memorial 9 does not carry an appropriation. Designation of Shakespeare Ghost Town would potentially have a fiscal impact, but that is outside the scope of this memorial.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
Enactment of the memorial would place a minor administrative impact on the Office of Cultural Affairs. However, the agency possesses the resources to absorb the impact without added resources.
