SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 44 requests that the Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) work cooperatively with the Educational Retirement Board (ERB), the State Department of Education (SDE) and the Commission on Higher Education to conduct a study of how health and retirement benefits offered to New Mexico public school and higher education employees compare with those offered to similar employees in other states.

The results of the study, which are to include a ranking of New Mexico's benefits compared to other states, is to be presented to the Legislative Council by December 15, 2000.

Significant Issues

Conflicting information on how health and retirement benefits afforded employees of New Mexico's public schools and institutions of higher learning compare with those of similar employees in other states prompted the introduction of this memorial. Results of the study are expected to resolve the information dilemma.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The public entities listed in the memorial will have to conduct the study using existing resources.
