SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 8 requests that the SDE and CYFD survey the current availability, type and cost to students of after-school programs for school-age children in New Mexico, including programs offered by public or private schools, local governments or non-profit organizations.

The memorial also requests that findings of the survey be presented to the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee and the Legislative Education Study Committee at their October 2000 meetings.

Significant Issues

The SDE analysis lists various, existing before-school and after-school programs funded by federal and local government entities. Although a limited data base is currently available at SDE, a study will be needed to satisfy the request in the memorial.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The study can be implemented with existing SDE staff and resources.
