SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 332 appropriates $800.0 from the general fund to the Office of Cultural Affairs to provide funding for the 75th anniversary celebration of New Mexico historic route 66. The appropriation is split among three projects for New Mexico's route 66 assets: 1) $450.0 for activities associated with the preservation, conservation and education of historic route 66 assets and to market the statewide "national diamond jubilee" celebration; 2) $250.0 to market the "remember the route" celebration to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in July 2001; and 3) $100.0 for statewide preservation, education and interpretive work. The bill has a clause that requires OCA to revert to the general fund any unexpended balance.

Significant Issues

Congress, in 1999, passed legislation to preserve the cultural resources of the Route 66 corridor through grants to states. However, an appropriation was not made to carry out the intent of the bill. Consequently, communities along the corridor continue to struggle to identify revenue sources to celebrate this historic route. Senate Bill 332 would provide the funding to begin the process to celebrate this history.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Senate Bill 332 appropriates $800.0 from the general fund. Aside from the appropriation, the bill would not have a fiscal impact on the OCA.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

Enactment of Senate Bill 332 would have only a minimal administrative impact on OCA, who could absorb the impact with existing resources.
