SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
This bill establishes a Social Science Trust Fund at the University of New Mexico to fund academic and professional development activities for graduate students, appropriating $500.0 from the general fund to the Fund. The Board of Regents shall promulgate rules to implement the Fund including student eligibility requirements.
Significant Issues
According to CHE, while graduate students in the physical sciences often have opportunities for professional development through sponsored research, students in the social sciences have limited availability to financial support.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $500.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY01 shall not revert to the general fund.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
As an alternative, CHE suggests that a similar Fund be set up for all public research institutions.
