SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
HJM55 requests NMVSC to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of continuing to use Fort Stanton as a veterans cemetery. Additionally, the memorial authorizes the agency to complete the study no later than October 1, 2000 and report its findings to an appropriate interim legislative committee.
FISCAL/ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
NMVSC reports that it would incur only minimal impact related to producing the report for the legislature.
CONFLICT/DUPLICATION/COMPANIONSHIP/RELATIONSHIP
HJM55 duplicates HJM38.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
The agency believes the feasibility study is a good starting point before undertaking any cemetery expansion. Additionally, the study will provide analysis to prevent problems associated with land acquisition such as: maintenance costs, labor needs and, building and grounds expenses. NMVSC
contends this comprehensive approach to determine cemetery needs is more efficient that a piece-meal approach which may be expensive.
