SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 306 appropriates $75.0 to SDE for a high school mock trial educational program.

Significant Issues

According to SDE, in the past, law-related education programs have included a mock trial component. In a mock trial, students prepare a case and in conjunction with their teacher and an attorney coach, they present the case in regional, state and/or national competitions. The purpose of the program is to promote an understanding of the legal system in the U.S.

Currently, the program is supported with in-kind donations from the New Mexico Bar Foundation, and/or other grant funding.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

House Bill 306 appropriates $75.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2001. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2001 shall revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

SDE will be responsible for oversight of this program.
