SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 175 appropriates funds to the Economic Development Department to allow the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University to expand availability of online agricultural, business and government information to participants in the annual border governors conference. In addition, the expanded services are for New Mexico businesses, educational institutions and state agencies in order to improve New Mexico's export business with Mexico.
Significant Issues
From 1994 to 1999, the United States increased exports to New Mexico by 100.1%. During the same period, New Mexico decreased exports by 26.3%. The bill attempts to enhance trade with Mexico by providing an Internet-based resource that provides vital information to those who participate in trade with Mexico.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The bill appropriates $70.0 from the general fund to the Economic Development Department. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2001 shall revert to the general fund.
