SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 131 appropriates $1000.0 to the SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2001 to expand the safe-school programs in the Santa Fe school district.

Significant Issues

The SDE analysis points out that New Mexico schools currently generate $2.9 million in federal funds through Title IV of the Improving America Schools Act for Safe and Drug Free Schools and that Santa Fe receives $181,967 from Title IV. Programs such as those included in the bill may be supported from federal sources, but the analysis does not address the sufficiency of these resources.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The bill appropriates $1,000.0 from the general fund to the SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2001. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance at the end of fiscal year 2001 shall revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

Current SDE can implement the provisions of the bill without additional staff or resources.
