RELATING TO COURTS; CREATING A NEW STATUTORY SALARY SCHEDULE FOR JUSTICES, JUDGES AND MAGISTRATES; REPEALING AND ENACTING SECTIONS OF THE NMSA 1978.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. A new section of Chapter 34, Article 1 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:

"[NEW MATERIAL] SALARIES OF JUSTICES, JUDGES AND MAGISTRATES.--

A. A justice of the supreme court shall receive an annual salary of eighty-seven thousand seven hundred seventy-three dollars ($87,773). The chief justice of the supreme court shall receive an annual salary of eighty-nine thousand seven hundred seventy-three dollars ($89,773).

B. A judge of the court of appeals shall receive an annual salary of eighty-three thousand three hundred eighty-four dollars ($83,384). The chief judge of the court of appeals shall receive an annual salary of eighty-five thousand two hundred eighty-four dollars ($85,284).

C. A district court judge shall receive an annual salary of seventy-nine thousand two hundred fifteen dollars ($79,215).

D. A metropolitan court judge shall receive an annual salary of seventy-one thousand two hundred ninety-four dollars ($71,294).

E. A magistrate shall receive an annual salary of fifty-three thousand four hundred seventy-one dollars ($53,471).

F. No additional salaries shall be paid to justices, judges or magistrates on account of services rendered the state. Justices of the supreme court, judges of the court of appeals, district court judges, metropolitan court judges and magistrates shall receive per diem and mileage for necessary travel on official business of the court as provided in the Per Diem and Mileage Act."

Section 2. REPEAL.--Section 34-1-9 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1993, Chapter 278, Section 1) is repealed.

Section 3. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2000.
