AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR STATEWIDE SCHOOL SAFETY MEASURES.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Two million five hundred thousand dollars ($2,500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal years 2001 and 2002 to provide school safety grants to school districts. Money from the appropriation may be used to purchase and install metal detectors and other safety infrastructure and to fund other school safety initiatives. The department shall work with the department of public safety in the development of grant applications and evaluation of proposals for awards. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
