COMMENDING NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR DR. WENDA TREVATHAN FOR HER OUTSTANDING WORK IN THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF HUMAN REPRODUCTION.
WHEREAS, Dr. Wenda Trevathan, professor in anthropology at New Mexico state university since 1983, is internationally recognized for her study of the many aspects of human reproduction, including childbirth, maternal behavior, menopause and evolutionary medicine; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Trevathan, a phi beta kappa graduate with honors from the university of North Carolina and a recipient of masters and doctoral degrees from the university of Colorado, was named as one of the top fifteen anthropologists in the country in 1997 by the Chronicle of Higher Education, and received the New Mexico state university Westhafer award for excellence in research in 1998; and
WHEREAS, other honors earned by Dr. Trevathan include the 1990 Margaret Mead award from the society for applied anthropology and the American anthropological association, and the Zia award for the best book by a New Mexico woman author from the New Mexico presswomen association; and
WHEREAS, teaching awards bestowed on Dr. Trevathan include the Carnegie foundation for the advancement of a teaching "professor of the year" award in 1994, and "outstanding researcher and lecturer" by the New Mexico state university research council; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Trevathan has written and published five respected professional books, seventeen professional journal articles, seventeen short articles and reviews, seven other scholarly publications and ten technical reports; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Trevathan's recent accomplishments include receiving five research grants and awards; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Trevathan has recently been named to the board of trustees of the New Mexico museum of natural history and science;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Dr. Wenda Trevathan be honored for her continued outstanding professional achievements, including her dedication to teaching and her ongoing research on the evolution of childbirth, evolutionary medicine and the health and development of women; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Dr. Trevathan be congratulated for being named to the board of trustees of the New Mexico museum of natural history and science; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent to Dr. Wenda Trevathan.
