SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The bill calls upon the Tourism Department (TD) to work with the New Mexico Route 66 Association, communities and Indian nations along historic Route 66 in the development of marketing and promotional materials such as event brochures and maps of New Mexico Route 66 for visitors to New Mexico for the 75^th anniversary of that highway. It further asks TD to develop cross-marketing and promotion of communities and Indian nations along Route 66 and to coordinate with other private and public tourism and visitors bureau organizations at local, regional and state levels for the 75^th anniversary of Route 66. The memorial would be distributed to affected organizations.

Significant Issues

According to TD, the July 2001 celebration of the historic highway, Route 66, has the support of the New Mexico Route 66 Association and the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau. TD has already been promoting Route 66 as a tourist attraction over the past several years and would continue to do so upon enactment of this memorial.
