SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 486 appropriates $150.0 to the State Department of Public Education for operational funding of educational radio station KANW in fiscal year 2000.

Significant Issues

Public radio station KANW serves the Albuquerque metropolitan area and is funded primarily by Albuquerque Public Schools and the University of New Mexico. It provides general programming as well as classroom instruction programming (K-12) allowing students access to a wide range of programs, including national satellite based programs.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill appropriates $150.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2000. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.

In fiscal year 1995, the KANW program was funded by SDE through the special projects appropriation in the amount of $25.0.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The State Department of Education would provide oversight responsibilities for this program which could be accomplished with existing staff.
