SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 179 appropriates 200.0 from the general fund to the Department of Health for expenditure in FY 2000 for the purpose of supporting a prostate cancer detection and control program..
Significant Issues
Last fiscal year a 100.0 appropriation was awarded the Department of Health to begin this program.. This year, additional monies are needed to increase the effort and to assist the Prostate Cancer Support Association of New Mexico. As the number of older men in New Mexico increases, it is extremely important to provide early detection and screening to as many as possible. Last year there were over 1700 new cases of prostate cancer reported and the numbers are expected to increase each year. Early detection and outreach will reduce the health care costs of this disease by providing treatment when less invasive techniques are more successful.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The Department of Health has begun this program this fiscal year and these monies will be used to expand the program. This will not cause any undue fiscal costs to the department.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
There already exists at the Department of Health an administrative structure to handle this program
