Synopsis of HENRC Amendment

The amendment delays reversion of these funds until the end of FY2002.

Synopsis of Bill

The bill would appropriate $500.0 general fund in FY2000 to the Office of Cultural Affairs to supplement federal funds to improve interpretive exhibits and renovate or preserve other historic features at Coronado, Jemez, Fort Selden and Lincoln state monuments. Unexpended funds would revert at the end of FY2000.

Significant Issues

New Mexico's state monuments (Coronado, Fort Selden, Jemez, Lincoln, and Fort Sumner) are popular tourist attractions. The monuments have buildings in need of repair, as well as attractions which could be enhanced. These funds would allow the Office of Cultural Affairs to address these needs.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

It is unlikely that the Office of Cultural Affairs would require additional staff to administer these funds.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

Why isn't Fort Sumner included among the state monuments which might benefit from these funds?

The amendment allows the funds to be retained until FY2002, but the bill appropriates the funds only for FY2000.
