0011| REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO APPOINT A NATIVE AMERICAN AS A
|
0012| MEMBER OF THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION.

0014| WHEREAS, Edward T. Begay, a Navajo from Gallup, has been a
|
0015| member of the state highway commission for the past six years;
|
0016| and
|
0017| WHEREAS, he was preceded by Edward O. Plummer, another
|
0018| Navajo commissioner; and
|
0019| WHEREAS, New Mexico spends a significant amount of its
|
0020| highway transportation budget on tribal and pueblo highway
|
0021| routes; and
|
0022| WHEREAS, the governor has committed his administration to
|
0023| a government-to-government relationship with the sovereign
|
0024| Native American citizens of the state of New Mexico; and
|
0025| WHEREAS, the governor has made significant commitments to
|
0001| support in law and with financial investments Native American
|
0002| governments' economic development; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, highway and transportation infrastructure is one
|
0004| of the most important economic investments made in a large,
|
0005| rural state like New Mexico; and
|
0006| WHEREAS, it is crucial that members of the state highway
|
0007| commission reflect the geographic and cultural diversity of the
|
0008| state;
|
0009| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0010| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to appoint a
|
0011| Native American as a member of the state highway commission;
|
0012| and
|
0013| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
|
0014| transmitted to the governor.
