0011| REQUESTING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION, THE OFFICE

0012| OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL REPRESENTATIVES

0013| TO WORK JOINTLY IN DEVELOPING A PLAN TO OBTAIN AND COORDINATE

0014| EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND

0015| LIBRARIES LOCATED IN NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL DISTRICTS AND

0016| COMMUNITIES.

0018| WHEREAS, the availability of educational technology
|
0019| resources in public schools and libraries is an important
|
0020| component in any student's educational growth and development;
|
0021| and
|
0022| WHEREAS, most students who are currently benefiting from
|
0023| educational technology resources are in public schools and
|
0024| libraries that are located in non-Native American districts and
|
0025| communities; and
|
0001| WHEREAS, the availability of educational technology
|
0002| resources in public schools and libraries in Native American
|
0003| tribal districts and communities has fallen far below that in
|
0004| non-Native American districts and communities; and
|
0005| WHEREAS, there has been little effort undertaken by the
|
0006| state department of public education and the office of cultural
|
0007| affairs to determine what educational technology resources
|
0008| should be made available to students in Native American schools
|
0009| and libraries; and
|
0010| WHEREAS, there is little question that Native American
|
0011| students need and deserve these educational technology
|
0012| resources in their schools and libraries;
|
0013| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0014| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state department of public
|
0015| education, the office of cultural affairs and Native American
|
0016| tribal representatives work jointly in developing a plan that
|
0017| will obtain and coordinate educational technology resources for
|
0018| public schools and libraries located in Native American tribal
|
0019| districts and communities; and
|
0020| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state department of public
|
0021| education, the office of cultural affairs and Native American
|
0022| tribal representatives report their findings to the legislative
|
0023| education study committee by September 30, 1997; and
|
0024| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0025| transmitted to the superintendent of public instruction, the
|
0001| state cultural affairs officer, Native American tribal
|
0002| representatives and the director of the legislative education
|
0003| study committee staff.
