0011| REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT THE NAVAJO

0012| AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT INDUSTRIES TO BECOME A FOOD VENDOR FOR THE

0013| UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE.

0015| WHEREAS, the Navajo nation food distribution program
|
0016| supports the Navajo agricultural product industries as a United
|
0017| States department of agriculture commodity food vendor; and
|
0018| WHEREAS, Navajo agricultural product industries is an
|
0019| Indian-owned enterprise that is capable of harvesting pinto
|
0020| beans for the United States department of agriculture; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, the Navajo nation food distribution program
|
0022| supports Navajo agricultural product industries' harvesting its
|
0023| own pinto beans for the United States department of agriculture
|
0024| so they can be used by Navajo nation food distribution program
|
0025| clients; and
|
0001| WHEREAS, the Navajo nation food distribution program wants
|
0002| to improve the dietary habits among households in the Navajo
|
0003| nation utilizing United States department of agriculture
|
0004| commodity food; and
|
0005| WHEREAS, in April 1996, a food preference survey conducted
|
0006| by the Navajo nation food distribution program revealed that
|
0007| eighty-one percent of its clients favor pinto beans and want
|
0008| them added to the United States department of agriculture
|
0009| commodity food list; and
|
0010| WHEREAS, the Navajo nation food distribution program would
|
0011| like to be receiving Navajo agricultural product industries'
|
0012| pinto beans in 1997; and
|
0013| WHEREAS, the Navajo nation food distribution program
|
0014| working with Navajo agricultural products industries and the
|
0015| United States department of agriculture will help the Navajo
|
0016| nation's people and its economy;
|
0017| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0018| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it support Navajo agricultural
|
0019| products industries to become a food vendor for the United
|
0020| States department of agriculture; and
|
0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0022| transmitted to the speaker of the house of representatives, the
|
0023| president pro tempore of the senate and the president of the
|
0024| Navajo nation.
