0011| EXPRESSING THE CONDOLENCE OF THE LEGISLATURE UPON THE DEATH OF
|
0012| FORMER SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE RAY ATCHISON.
|

0014| WHEREAS, Ray Atchison died December 15, 1996; and
|
0015| WHEREAS, he served for twelve years in the legislature in
|
0016| both the house and the senate between 1961 and 1973 and was a
|
0017| member of the San Juan county commission; and
|
0018| WHEREAS, Atchison was also a delegate to the republican
|
0019| national convention in 1964, when Barry Goldwater was
|
0020| nominated; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, he was born in Idaho on September 6, 1911, grew
|
0022| up in Colorado and moved to New Mexico in 1930; and
|
0023| WHEREAS, he graduated from high school in La Veta,
|
0024| Colorado, and he married Iris Nobel of Aztec in 1933; and
|
0025| WHEREAS, he was a Mason and member of the San Juan Lodge
|
0001| 25, the Shriners, the Elks and the Scottish Rite Freemasonry
|
0002| Lodge of Santa Fe; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, he started Atchison construction in 1945 from
|
0004| which he retired in the early 1970s; and
|
0005| WHEREAS, he donated time to build football and baseball
|
0006| fields for the Farmington and Aztec community youth; and
|
0007| WHEREAS, his granddaughter, Tammy Price, said that his
|
0008| dedication to his employees made his business a success; and
|
0009| WHEREAS, former legislative finance committee director
|
0010| Marilyn Budke said that he was a very effective member of the
|
0011| house when there were very few republicans serving in those
|
0012| days; and
|
0013| WHEREAS, his son, Lee Atchison, said that his father never
|
0014| lost an election, "which says something for him. His sense of
|
0015| integrity and his own personal sense of ethics were probably
|
0016| one of his most well-known characteristics."; and
|
0017| WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife, Rachel; a daughter,
|
0018| Janice; a son, Raymond Lee; a brother, Richard Atchison; four
|
0019| grandsons; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; three
|
0020| step-children; and two step-grandchildren;
|
0021| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0022| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolence be extended to the family
|
0023| and friends of Ray Atchison, a loving and devoted New Mexican;
|
0024| and
|
0025| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0001| transmitted to the family of Ray Atchison.
