0011| RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTION OF SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
|
0012| CENTERS TO THE STATE ECONOMY AND SUPPORTING AN INCREASE IN
|
0013| FUNDING FOR THEIR EXPANSION.
|

|
0015| WHEREAS, the commission on higher education administers
|
0016| the eighteen small business development centers, which are
|
0017| located in various cities around the state, including Carlsbad,
|
0018| Grants and Los Alamos; and
|
0019| WHEREAS, the purpose of the small business development
|
0020| centers is to strengthen the economy of New Mexico by providing
|
0021| direct assistance, entrepreneurial education and resource
|
0022| references to help the creation and expansion of new
|
0023| businesses; and
|
0024| WHEREAS, some of the services provided by the centers
|
0025| include technical assistance in creating business plans,
|
0001| minority business development, access to capital, marketing
|
0002| methods and many other services focused on helping the small
|
0003| business owner succeed or expand his business; and
|
0004| WHEREAS, the success of the small business development
|
0005| centers is impressive; from January to June 1996, the centers
|
0006| were responsible for the opening of one hundred twenty-two new
|
0007| businesses, which created four hundred twenty full-time jobs
|
0008| and one hundred thirty-eight part-time jobs, enhancing the
|
0009| economy and quality of life for all New Mexicans; and
|
0010| WHEREAS, funding for the small business development
|
0011| centers has remained constant, while costs and demand for
|
0012| services have increased dramatically;
|
0013| NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0014| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislature support an increase in
|
0015| funding for the small business development centers, which will
|
0016| in turn directly contribute to a healthy state economy; and
|
0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the commission on higher
|
0018| education and the state director of the small business
|
0019| development centers report the status of the centers to the
|
0020| appropriate interim legislative committee by October 15, 1997;
|
0021| and
|
0022| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0023| sent to the commission on higher education, the state director
|
0024| of the small business development centers and the secretary of
|
0025| economic development.
