0011| RELATING TO EDUCATION; AMENDING A SECTION OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL

0012| CODE PERTAINING TO STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN INTERSCHOLASTIC

0013| EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
|

0015| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
|
0016| Section 1. Section 22-12-2.1 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1986,
|
0017| Chapter 33, Section 27, as amended) is amended to read:
|
0018| "22-12-2.1. INTERSCHOLASTIC EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES--
|
0019| STUDENT PARTICIPATION.--
|
0020| A. A student shall have a 2.0 grade point average
|
0021| on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent, either cumulatively or for
|
0022| the grading period immediately preceding participation, in
|
0023| order to be eligible to participate in any interscholastic
|
0024| extracurricular activity. For purposes of this section,
|
0025| "grading period" is a period of time not less than six weeks.
|
0001| The provisions of this subsection shall not apply to special
|
0002| education students placed in class C and class D programs.
|
0003| B. No student shall be absent from school for
|
0004| school-sponsored interscholastic extracurricular activities
|
0005| in excess of fifteen days per semester, and no class may be
|
0006| missed in excess of fifteen times per semester.
|
0007| C. The provisions of Subsections A and B of this
|
0008| section apply [to all] only to interscholastic
|
0009| extracurricular activities.
|
0010| D. The state superintendent may issue a waiver
|
0011| relating to the number of absences for participation in any
|
0012| state or national competition. The state superintendent shall
|
0013| develop a procedure for petitioning cumulative provision
|
0014| eligibility cases, similar to other eligibility situations.
|
0015| E. Student standards for participation in
|
0016| interscholastic extracurricular activities shall be applied
|
0017| beginning with a student's [second semester of grade eight]
|
0018| academic record in grade nine."
|
