0012| REQUESTING THE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO STUDY THE

0013| POTENTIAL FOR PROVIDING RESIDENT TUITION STATUS TO STUDENTS FROM

0014| STATES WITH RECIPROCAL PROVISIONS.

0016| WHEREAS, the Texas legislature lowered nonresident tuition
|
0017| for students who reside in a state with a common border with
|
0018| Texas and reside within one hundred thirty-five miles of the
|
0019| Texas border; and
|
0020| WHEREAS, Texas provides for a nonresident to pay resident
|
0021| tuition if the neighboring state reciprocates; and
|
0022| WHEREAS, many New Mexico residents live closer to Texas
|
0023| post-secondary institutions than to New Mexico post-secondary
|
0024| institutions; and
|
0025| WHEREAS, New Mexico post-secondary institutions may gain
|
0001| students from such a provision;
|
0002| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0003| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the commission on higher education be
|
0004| requested to study the potential for providing lower tuition for
|
0005| nonresident students from Texas or other neighboring states that
|
0006| provide reciprocal agreements and to report to the legislative
|
0007| education study committee with its recommendations by December
|
0008| 1, 1996; and
|
0009| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0010| transmitted to the commission on higher education and to the
|
0011| legislative education study committee.
