0012|     MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY

0013|     OF NEW MEXICO.

0015|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0016|       Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--
    |
0017|            A.  Four hundred thousand dollars ($400,000) is
    |
0018|     appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of
    |
0019|     the university of New Mexico for expenditure in fiscal year 1997
    |
0020|     for the following projects in the following amounts:
    |
0021|                 (1)  two hundred fifty thousand dollars
    |
0022|     ($250,000) for recruitment of academically exceptional graduate
    |
0023|     students to improve the quality and quantity of research work
    |
0024|     done at the university of New Mexico; and
    |
0025|                 (2)  one hundred fifty thousand dollars
    |
0001|     ($150,000) for the art of the Americas institute to conduct
    |
0002|     teaching, research and public service projects and promote
    |
0003|     cultural diversity in the arts.
    |
0004|            B.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining
    |
0005|     at the end of fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the general fund.

0025|       1.   On page 2, line 3, after "B.", insert "The institution

0001|   receiving the appropriation in this bill shall submit a program

0002|   evaluation to the legislative finance committee and the commission
    |
0003|   on higher education by August 1, 1999 detailing the benefits to
    |
0004|   the state of New Mexico from having this program implemented for a
    |
0005|   three-year period.".,
