A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING A WATER CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT CURRICULUM TO BE INCORPORATED INTO MULTIPLE SUBJECTS IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE EDUCATION.
WHEREAS, water is necessary for humans to flourish, and conservation and management of water resources are essential to any thriving society; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico faces significant challenges with water conservation and management that threaten the state's economy, including the agriculture industry; and
WHEREAS, water conservation and management hold cultural and spiritual significance for many of New Mexico's diverse communities; and
WHEREAS, educating students about water conservation and management will prepare the next generation of New Mexico residents to solve the state's water challenges and will also connect students with the state's rich, historic traditions; and
WHEREAS, the principles of water conservation and management can be integrated across multiple subjects to provide for a holistic and engaging learning experience for students from all backgrounds and with varied interests;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the public education department be requested to study the feasibility of developing a water conservation and management curriculum for kindergarten through twelfth grade; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the public education department be requested to focus its study on ways to incorporate a water conservation and management curriculum into other subjects, including math, science and history; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the public education department be requested to publish the findings, conclusions and recommendations from the study in a report and present the report to the legislative education study committee on or before December 1, 2025; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of public education and the legislative education study committee.
