A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ALBUQUERQUE OASIS FOR PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES TO OLDER ADULTS IN THE ALBUQUERQUE AREA.

 

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis is a nonprofit organization that has been providing educational and volunteer opportunities to older adults in the Albuquerque area for thirty-two years, since 1991; and

     WHEREAS, the mission of Albuquerque oasis is to promote healthy or successful aging in three ways: lifelong learning through continuing education, social engagement and healthy living; and

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis offers a wide range of educational lectures, including lectures on topics relating to history, southwest history, religion, mathematics, science and current events; and

     WHEREAS, lectures are typically a ninety-minute "one and done" presentation by an expert in the field, and Albuquerque oasis also offers art workshops, cooking demonstrations, walks, hikes and book groups; and

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis also offers a wide range of health and wellness educational programs, both through lectures and movement, to promote healthy living; and

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis is grateful to all of the many experts in New Mexico who have brought their expertise to Albuquerque oasis audiences over the years; and

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis has an intergenerational tutoring program that trains retirees to mentor or tutor elementary school children to improve reading skills; and

     WHEREAS, with the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in the rearview mirror, New Mexico children need help now more than ever to reach grade-level proficiency; and

     WHEREAS, more than three hundred older adults are helping three hundred fifty elementary school children in Albuquerque, Belen and Bernalillo public schools in the current 2022-2023 school year; and

     WHEREAS, Albuquerque oasis touches the lives of more than two thousand five hundred people in the Albuquerque metro area and is a longtime local treasure;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Albuquerque oasis be recognized for the significant contributions it makes in the promotion of healthy and successful aging; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Albuquerque oasis.
