A MEMORIAL
DECLARING JANUARY 30, 2023 "UNM DAY" IN THE SENATE IN RECOGNITION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PUBLIC SERVICE ON BEHALF OF THE RESIDENTS OF NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico was founded in 1889; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the state's flagship research institution, serving nearly twenty-two thousand students and employing tens of thousands of New Mexicans, including employees of the university of New Mexico hospital; and
WHEREAS, university of New Mexico students attain forty-five percent of the state's baccalaureate degrees, forty percent of the state's graduate degrees and eighty-two percent of the state's doctoral and first professional degrees; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico annually awards over ninety-eight million dollars ($98,000,000) in scholarships; and
WHEREAS, there are almost two hundred fourteen thousand active alumni, with lobos in every state, including one hundred twenty-four thousand in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is celebrating a century of graduate studies, giving students access to nationally recognized faculty, cutting-edge research, professional and academic development and student support; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico's graduate and professional student association is celebrating fifty-three years of identifying, promoting and supporting the interests of nearly five thousand five hundred graduate and professional students; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico health sciences center is the state's largest integrated health care treatment, research and education organization, with national recognition for primary care, rural medicine, family medicine, nursing and midwifery, and is home to the state's only national-cancer-institute-designated comprehensive cancer center; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico provides a research-driven education, where faculty members engage in investigation and scholarship that create new knowledge, which brings sustained wealth to New Mexico's economy; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is a community of unique perspectives that embraces peoples' differences and celebrates a culture of contrast rather than a contrast of cultures; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the university for New Mexico;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 30, 2023 be declared "UNM Day" in the senate in recognition of the university of New Mexico's service and dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico.
