A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO INSTALL A PLAQUE IN THE STATE CAPITOL PRESENTED BY THE NEW MEXICO STATE ORGANIZATION DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PASSAGE OF THE NINETEENTH AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION GIVING WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
WHEREAS, the New Mexico state organization daughters of the American revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization founded in 1890; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico state organization daughters of the American revolution has sixteen chapters in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, membership of the New Mexico state organization daughters of the American revolution is ethnically and religiously diverse, having in common only members' descent from American revolution progenitors; and
WHEREAS, the organization has as its goals the promotion
of education, patriotism, history and historic preservation, including the recognition of significant events in national and state history; and
WHEREAS, several early members were among the ardent New Mexico suffragists in the fight for women's right to vote; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico suffragists, men and women alike, valiantly faced down opposition to grant women the right to vote on local, state and national levels; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico voted to ratify the nineteenth amendment to the United States constitution on February 21, 1920; and
WHEREAS, a plaque commemorating the historic passage of the nineteenth amendment to the United States constitution would be a fitting acknowledgment; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico legislative council policies require that the placement of such a plaque be approved by a two thirds' majority vote in each house upon the recommendation of the capitol recognition subcommittee;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
OF NEW MEXICO that, upon receipt of the recommendation of the capitol recognition subcommittee, the New Mexico legislative council be requested to install a plaque in the state capitol presented by the New Mexico state organization daughters of the American revolution to recognize the significance of the one hundredth anniversary of the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the United States constitution giving women the right to vote; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council, the director of the legislative council service and the New Mexico state organization daughters of the American revolution.
