A MEMORIAL

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE KAREN C. BASH AND RECOGNIZING HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, Representative Karen C. Bash, a Democrat, was elected to the house of representatives in 2018 to represent district 68 in Bernalillo county, served her first term in 2019 and will have served four years by the end of 2022; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash is the vice chair of the house health and human services committee and is a member of the house labor, veterans' and military affairs committee; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash is a member of the courts, corrections and justice committee and is an advisory member of the legislative health and human services committee during the interim; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and anthropology from Phillips university, which she attended from 1964 to 1970; and

      WHEREAS, Representative Bash earned a master's degree in education and teaching of individuals in secondary special education programs at Lamar university in Beaumont, Texas, which she attended from 1979 to 1981; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash learned her lifelong values and faith from her parents and was called to the ministry, earning a master of divinity degree from the university of Dubuque theological seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, which she attended from 1985 to 1988; and

     WHEREAS, after graduating, Representative Bash was called to be a pastor of several Iowa congregations; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash taught in an early childhood home visitation program focused on infants at risk for developmental delays and those infants' parents; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash and her husband, Allan, moved to Albuquerque in 2011 and ran a small business; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash served as a moderator of the congregational council from 2014 to 2015; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash served the greater Albuquerque community as a member of the rotary club of Albuquerque Sandia, and she is a Paul Harris fellow; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash has volunteered at the roadrunner food bank, the Rio Grande food project and several homeless projects and assisted living homes; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash also received an honored ministry award from her congregation in Shenandoah, Iowa; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash and her husband have raised two children, Keenan and Kerrie; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Bash credits her family and diverse career path for guiding her policy priorities in the legislature, which include child well-being, early childhood education, food insecurity and the expansion of access to health care and health education;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Representative Karen C. Bash be recognized for living her faith and her advocacy for the well-being of children; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Representative Karen C. Bash.
