A MEMORIAL
HONORING HOYT PATTISON AND RECOGNIZING HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, Hoyt Pattison, who served as a Republican state representative for district 63 in eastern New Mexico, died March 3, 2021; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was born August 25, 1930; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was a lifelong resident of Clovis, with the exception of his attendance at New Mexico state university and Ohio university; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was raised during the depression and grew up working hard from a very early age, expecting the same from everybody around him; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison married Margaret Joy Bumgarner on June 4, 1954; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was a lifelong rancher whose family raised sheep, when most other ranchers raised cattle; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was also an experimental farmer who planted various crops, but usually stayed with milo, wheat and sugar beets as cash crops; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison served eleven legislative terms, from 1963 to 1984; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was the minority whip from 1965 to 1966 and the minority floor leader from 1975 to 1984; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was the vice chair of the agriculture committee from 1969 to 1970 and a committee member from 1963 to 1968 and from 1971 to 1984; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was also an active member of the consumer and public affairs committee, the judiciary committee, the labor committee and the natural resources committee at different times during his legislative tenure; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison believed in New Mexico in the same way he believed in himself, true and from the earth; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison farmed the family homestead, listened to the needs of his neighbors and took action; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was known as the "go-to guy" on anything related to agriculture and always knew where issues intersected with people; and
WHEREAS, colleagues recall Representative Pattison as a very conservative gentleman who was able to put together, and help bring people together into, a coalition; and
WHEREAS, after his legislative service, Representative Pattison became a lobbyist for the dairy producers of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison was also an inventor and an innovator, with interests in energy and ethanol production; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison received a patent for one of his innovations, the clean funnel, which was a basic funnel with caps added on each end to reduce mess; and
WHEREAS, Representative Pattison is survived by his wife, Joy Pattison; his children, Rose Ellen Dunn and Lennis, Roger Pattison and Kerrie, Melinda Joy Pattison and Will Pattison; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Hoyt Pattison be honored and recognized for his public service and his dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the family of Hoyt Pattison.
