AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR PROGRAMMATIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRANT COUNTY STUDENTS IN SEVENTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADES IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND MATHEMATICS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--
A. One hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal years 2020 and 2021 to contract for services from an organization in Grant county that will partner with western New Mexico university and New Mexico state university, local businesses and municipalities to provide seventh through twelfth grade students in Silver consolidated school district and Cobre consolidated school district opportunities to participate in summer academy camps focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The contract shall:
(1) require at least five one-week high-caliber academy camps; and
(2) include provisions for:
(a) professional development opportunities by including middle and high school teachers as observers and participants;
(b) a community event after each academy to provide opportunities for students to showcase what they have learned and engage families and the community in the students' educational process; and
(c) carrying forward and integrating the learning concepts and fundamentals into after-school programs during the 2020-2021 school year.
B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2021 shall revert to the general fund.
