A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING SENATOR HOWIE C. MORALES FOR HIS INDUCTION INTO THE NEW MEXICO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES HALL OF FAME.

 

     WHEREAS, Senator Howie C. Morales' commitment to public service and pride in serving his community were recognized when Senator Morales was inducted by the New Mexico baseball coaches association into the New Mexico high school baseball coaches hall of fame; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico high school baseball coaches hall of fame induction ceremony was held on December 8, 2017 at the MCM Elegante hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico high school baseball coaches hall of fame recognizes successful baseball coaches who have also achieved prominence in other fields, such as business, industry, science and government, in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales graduated from Silver high school, received a bachelor of science degree in education and a master's degree in bilingual education from western New Mexico university and a doctorate in education from New Mexico state university; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales was an accomplished high school baseball coach at Silver high school and Cobre high school; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales was the youngest head coach in New Mexico to reach two hundred wins, and he retired in 2009 after coaching to an impressive record of two hundred three wins to forty-nine losses; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales won a state title in 2008 and led his team to state runner-up titles in 2002, 2007 and 2009; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales was also part of seven district championships and seven regional championships as a head coach; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales credits his success to the countless assistants and volunteers in the baseball program; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales praised volunteers who gave their time to staff the concession stand and to maintain the field for the success of the baseball program; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales expressed pride that he helped shape men and women to become productive members of society; and

     WHEREAS, the Cobre high school baseball stadium is named after Senator Morales; and

     WHEREAS, as a state senator, Senator Morales advocates for legislation that benefits children and students and champions quality education; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales was a member of the senate education committee in 2008, a member of the senate finance committee from 2008 to 2017, a member of the senate public affairs committee in 2008 and an advisory member of the legislative education study committee from 2009 to 2012 and in 2017 and a member from 2013 to 2016; and

     WHEREAS, Cobre high school athletic director Pat Abalos stated that Senator Morales' accomplishments as a baseball coach are outstanding and that he established a program that is the benchmark around the state; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales continues to be active in sports and is a key player when the senate "lobos" compete against the house "aggies" in the legislature's annual hoops 4 hope basketball game; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Morales has continued to extend those leadership qualities to his public service as a legislator and his support of education initiatives;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Senator Howie C. Morales be recognized and congratulated for his induction into the New Mexico high school baseball coaches hall of fame; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Senator Howie C. Morales.
